Do you like natural materials? It’s great to have at home furniture that is made of wood, stones and other natural stuff. It’s even better if the material is processed as little as possible and keeps its original shape, smell and outlook.
That’ why furniture made of wooden trunk and branches instead of planks and boards is so lovely and popular.
Do you like such furniture too? Here are some ideas what exactly you can have and how you can make it yourself:
Willow twig furniture
There is an entire category of furniture made of willow twigs. They are thin and easy for bending and very stable. Willow twigs are most often used to make comfortable and large rustic chairs and even beds. This type of furniture is very suitable for outdoor usage especially in warm summer. It doesn’t overheat and is very nice to touch.
There are many places where you can buy ready willow furniture. But you can make it yourself too as twigs and fallen branches are everywhere and are relatively easy to work with.
If you find a small thin trunk or a thick tree branch you can use it to make a lovely hanger. It doesn’t need to be smooth or straight. In fact small curvatures, knots and twigs can make it even better. You can enhance such a hanger by attaching some more branches to it, metal parts or even just few calks.
Branch hangers can be bough ready as well, although usually the stores often imitations made of plastic or metal rather than hangers made of real tree branches.
Fences, doors and other outdoor furniture
Fences made of twigs can look very cute. In fact you can find some of those in the villages because they have been quite popular a century ago. They usually consist of long twigs inwrought in piles and sometimes tied with wire. Again willow is very popular for this but you can also find fences made from bamboo branches. These are also called wattle fences.
If you want to build such a fence yourself, you need to collect a lot of branches and ensure they will be inwrought closely to ensure stability. Thicker branches should be used for the vertical supports. Use bendable twigs and branches – too old and dry ones will pip when you try to interwine them.
Tables and chairs
Tables and chairs are of course most popular type of tree branch furniture. Often the branches are used only for the back or the legs while the seat or the table surface are made of solid boards. Of course it’s also possible to make the furniture entirely from branches, just like a willow twig furniture. The chairs made of thicker branches usually allow some distance between each of them unlike the typical twig furniture where the twigs are dense.
Outdoor benches are also very popular type of natural tree furniture. Sometimes the greatest benches can be made of wood trunks – cut the trunk in the middle endlong and you have the seat. Two shorter pieces placed perpendicular and you have the legs. The other half of the trunk can be the back (although you can choose a plank here to keep the construction lighter).
